In general,Shahrukh Khan is hailed as the king of Indian Film Industry finds acceptance among the masses while Aamir Khan is touted as a perfectionist and is cherished by both masses and classes.The scenario has changed in recent years with Shahrukh's movies garnering huge accolades from critics as well.This is definitely a genial compliment for the actor in him as he is mostly popular for his romantic roles.
At the end of 2009 we saw Three Idiots as the biggest release of Indian film industry.The film was a commercial success and was praised by critics as well.The film based on the life of three college students went on to break several records at the Box Office in India and overseas for a Hindi film.The major reason for the triumph of the movie could be the issues raised and how well the director articulated them in the film.
Come 2010 and we have another Khan waiting to even things with another at the Box office.Shahrukh came up with My Name Is Khan (MNIK) on the Valentine's week,quite in sync with his romantic image.The film was hyped and was sold to the giant Fox searchlight who took the responsibility to promote it.The film features Shahrukh Khan in lead role and takes on the global issue of terrorism and its aftermath on a community.The film also marks the come back of hit onscreen pair of Shahrukh Khan and Kajol after a space of nine long years.The film is definitely getting good reviews and collections but its longevity at the box office is suspected by many trade analysts.
It is true that both the mentioned films are quite the opposite of each other but the comparisons are legitimate as the stars concerned are big and fan following is immense.Three Idiots is a wholesome experience with everyone contributing to its success while MNIK is more of a one man's quest to prove that he is not a terrorist despite being a Muslim.Three Idiots has a youth appeal and has high repeat value whereas MNIK is bound to lose its sheen in 2-3 weeks as it doesn't appeal much to the masses and critics too have not welcomed the film very much.Three Idiots banked on its general positive reviews and timely humor.Though,it is doubted that a viewer will watch MNIK again.
The collections of MNIK were followed closely by the media as the film hit with a controversy and it could have doomed at the Box Office.But as the case was,the media took it as its responsibility to make MNIK a big hit and claimed that it surpassed Three Idiots even though it lagged far behind.MNIK surely leads at the overseas front as there is aggressive marketing there but collections in single screens in north India started to dip as the first weekend was over.
Today,more and more movies are declared hit even before their release.It sounds strange but it's a fact that we used to have paid previews in past but now we have paid reviews at our disposal.Same people debunked many of the Akshay Kumar,Salman Khan and other movies in the past but failed to do the same at the time of MNIK.Below is the actual collection of the two movies at the box office in India on the first weekend:
My Name Is Khan - Three Idiots
Day 1 8 crores - 12.5 crores
Day 2 9.5 crores - 11.5 crores
Day 3 12 crores - 13.5 crores
Total 29.5 crores - 37.5 crores
From the above figures it is clear who leads at the Indian Box Office.The overseas collections are slightly higher for MNIK in initial phases but Three Idiots enjoyed good results for 7-8 weeks which is a remote possibility for MNIK.On a whole,both the films are accepted by audience with Three Idiots taking a substantial lead.Having said that,it would have been much better that there was no comparison.At the end of the day every film is different and caters to its distinct audience.
