Most students studying abroad aim to learn more advanced knowledge,special skills and also to learn more about another culture.For that reason,the home-stay program provides these students an opportunity to live and communicate with Americans directly,which helps the students adapt to the new culture and customs in a shorter time.Though such a program might have some minor negative effects,its significance for foreign students is invaluable and its advantages have overweighed those disadvantages of it.
Firstly,many foreign students face a common big problem that most of them cannot use the foreign language fluently,thus leading to the difficulty of daily communication.However,the program offers students a chance to communicate with native speakers every day.Students can talk with family members freely and learn from their pronunciation.Otherwise a student who does not join this program might have fewer chances to talk with natives since most students would like to stay with their compatriots and thus using a foreign language rarely.
Moreover,living in a foreign family helps a student learn a different culture directly and become adapt to it rapidly.For instance,students can learn from natives’ daily behavior by contacting with them every day; they can celebrate a foreign festival with the family members become familiar with it easier than other students who do not live with Americans.Furthermore,imagine when a student watches television program or has a dinner with the family members,the student will directly learn about the natives attitudes towards certain events through communication which has great influence on the student himself and let him understand the Americans’ view values and world deeply.
However,there actually exist some negative effects of this program.First,the student who joins this program might lack the chance of contact with their compatriots,which might lead him a sense of loneliness.Second,a student might feel confined by the family since he has to obey many rules or orders if he want to stay longer.Finally,living in another family and seeing the happy life of other family members might make a student more homesick because no person would care for him anymore.Nonetheless,if a student is independent and positive enough,he would cope with these problems correctly.
In my opinion,the advantages of living in an American family are invaluable in helping the students live better lives in a foreign country,and I think the program should be widely spread.Even though there are some advantages of this program,we should make it clear that everything has both its positive side and negative side.What’s more,those disadvantages would be nothing when compared with the great advantages.
