The Revolt of Islam, is a narrative poem in twelve cantos consisting of 4,800 lines, composed by Percy Bysshe Shelley in September,1817. This poem is about a poet and his lover's common struggle to lead the people of the Golden City against their oppressors. The people revolution succeeded, but the tyrant came back soon. The people were trodden down heavily, the plague was raging, evidences of drought and famine were al around. Under the priest's instigation, the couple were burned at the stake. They were punished voluntarily in order to stop the spreading of the plague.
Things and people in the Revolt of Islam by the poet were not taken directly from the real world, however, they are not utterly without practical basis, just enveloped in the romantic fantasy color, reflected the reality. The frustration of the revolution, the restoration of the tyrant and people's struggle against the restoration insinuated accurately the strangle of the then French Revolution by Holy Alliance and the situation of the total restoration in Europe. Refer to the description of the struggle against the restoration, it's also the summary of social reality that European people struggled against the Holy Alliance and the British people set off a wave of revolution against the government.
The poem is full of symbolic meanings.
