1903年3月8日，美国芝加哥市的女工为了反对资产阶级的压迫，剥削和歧视，争取自由平等，举行了大罢工和示威游行。这由于斗争得到了美国广大劳动妇女的支持和热烈响应。
联合国从1975年开始庆祝国际妇女节，大会规定每年的3月8日为国际妇女节。从此三八节就成为全世界劳动妇女为争取和平、争取妇女儿童的权力，争取妇女解放斗争的节日。
我国第一次纪念三八国际劳动妇女始于1924年。当年我过妇女在中国共产党的领导下，与广州举行了三八国际劳动妇女节的纪念活动。
中华人民共和国成立之后，中共中央人民政府政务院于1949年12月通令全国，定3月8日为妇女节。
