1、compensating advantage这里是相对于前面的difficulty而言的,因为困难,所以后面有“弥补性”或“补偿性”的优势,而advantage后面的of引导了介词短语可以看作是它的定语形式,是对advantage的补充性说明,翻译的时候并不需要直接把of译出来,用一个分句形式把of结构体现出来即可.
2.如果一定要翻出“for which reason”的话,可以译为“因为这一原因”,which指代的是前面的"his power.was very limited"；
3.as well founded the charge理解的时候可以还原为"the charge made by...is not well founded",意为“站不住脚的”,“没有根据的”；
4.the common run of men可以看作是个固定短语,表示“普通人”、“寻常人”之意,superior to也算是个固定搭配关系,表示“优于……”,“比……优越”,与起相反的是"inferior to"
