King Lear
The first scene: In the castle
Presenter: King Lear of Britain was more than eighty years old. He was growing weary of being king, so he decided to give up his title and spend the rest of his days in peace. King Lear has no sons, but he had three daughters. Two of his daughters had married. Cordelia was not married yet, but she had two suitors. One is the king of France, and the other was the Duke of Burgundy. King Lear decided to divide his kingdom in three equal parts and give one part of each to his daughters. One day, he summoned each of his children and two suitors of Cordelia. He wanted to be sure that all his daughters loved him dearly. He also wanted to decide who would marry Cordelia.
(Goneril, Regan, Cordelia and her two suitors went into the castle.)
King Lear: Goneril, my oldest daughter, come here, tell me, how much do you love me?
Goneril: I love you, father, more than I can say. You are dearer to me more than my own eyes, dearer than my own life.
King Lear: (happily) Oh, I’m so happy, Goneril, I’ll give you one-third of the kingdom.
Goneril: It’s my pleasure, father.
King Lear: Regan, my second daughter, come here, tell me, how much do you love me?
Regan: I love you even more than Goneril. My only happiness lies in loving you. I want nothing else.
King Lear: (happily) Oh, I’m so glad, Regan, I’ll give you one-third of my kingdom.
Regan: It’s my honor, father.
Cordelia: Oh, I can’t believe what my selfish sisters just said, they are exaggerating their love, and how can they lie to our father?
King Lear: Come here, my dear, what can you say? How much do you love me?
Cordelia: Not more than Goneril and Regan.
King Lear: What? You can say nothing more? I am sure that you love me. Why can’t you say more? I suggest you say more. You know what I want to hear.
Cordelia: I am your child. You have raised me and cared for me. That same loving care I give you in return. I will obey you always. I will love you always. I will honor you always.
King Lear: (angrily shout) You are no longer my daughter. You do not love me as much as your sisters. Therefore, I will not give you one-third of my kingdom. I’ll divide the last third between Goneril and Regan.
(Goneril and Regan were very happy, they were celebrating.)
Duke of Burgundy: What a stupid woman! She is poor now. I won’t marry her.
(Duke of Burgundy ran away.)
French King: Oh, how honest! I’ll marry her for sure.
(The French King came to King Lear’s front.)
French King: Your Majesty, can I have your permission to marry Cordelia?
King Lear: Take her! For she is no longer a daughter of mine! I never want to see her face again!
(The French King and Cordelia sadly left.)
The second scene: In Goneril’s castle
Presenter: In the next year, King Lear lived in his oldest daughter, Goneril’s castle. However, his greedy daughter and her servants treated him badly. After a year, King Lear can’t stand it any more. He wanted to have a talk with her daughter.
King Lear: I give all my wealth to you and your sister. I can’t believe everything changed only in one year. I still remember what you had told me how much you love me.
Goneril: Ha ha ha… My poor dad, I’ve had enough of you and your servants. This is my castle, and this is my kingdom, go away. Go away!
King Lear: (sadly) I won’t stay with you any longer. I’ll go to stay with Regan. She will keep her promise.
(King Lear left the castle sadly.)
Goneril: (happily to his husband) My dear, everything is ok. The old man has already left. Are you satisfied? Let’s celebrate it!
(Goneril’s husband gave Goneril a cup of wine.)
Goneril’s husband: Yes, Let’s celebrate it. Now, all the kingdom is belong to me!
(Goneril felt very surprised. The cup in her hand fell to the ground. Suddenly, she is in pain.)
Goneril: You…you have poisoned me! You’re so…so…
(Goneril fell down and die. Her husband laugh.)
The third scene: In Regan’s castle
Presenter: King Lear hurried to Regan’s castle. He thought Regan still loved him. However…
(King Lear knocked on the castles door.)
King Lear: Regan! Regan! My dear daughter, I miss you so much. I’ll stay with you. You are the daughter who truly loves your father, right?
Regan: Oh, father, yes, I have loved you because you were so rich and powerful. But now you’re only a beggar. How can you let me love you as much as before?
King Lear: My god, how foolish I am! Your ingratitude pierces me to the heart. Your love is only words. Your deeds are not the deeds of love at all. I will go, I will go away from you, I would rather sleep in the forest than sleeping with you.
(King Lear left Regan’s castle. He was already out of his mind.)
Regan’s husband: What an evil woman you are! What a dishonest woman you are! I can’t stand you are my wife any longer, go out of the castle! I am the only master of the castle!
Regan: All I do is what you want me to do. You are the evil man! I’m only the tool you use to get money and land. I want to kill you.
(Regan suddenly took out a sword and killed her husband.)
Regan: Forgive me, father, I’ll never do it again!
(Regan killed herself with the sword.)
The fourth scene: Outside the castle
Presenter: The poor old king had already lost his mind. He had no place to live. He thought about his youngest daughter day and night. He thought whether she would still love him.
(King Lear walked around. Cordelia come up to her father.)
Cordelia: Father, father! I’m Cordelia. My husband’s army, the French army has come. We’ll take the kingdom back and rescue you.
King Lear: Cordelia, I…am a foolish old man. I feel that I have lost my mind. Cordelia, I beg your forgiveness.
Cordelia: Oh, my father, you are the king of the kingdom in my heart forever. I am your daughter forever. I swear to love you always.
(Goneril’s husband went beside them.)
Goneril’s husband: Cordelia, I must tell you, your French army is defeated. As the French King’s wife, you are the enemy of Britain, you will be taken as prisoner.
(Goneril’s husband went to pull Cordelia.)
Cordelia: Father, I love you. I can use my life to prove it.
King Lear: Cordelia, I have lost all my wealth before, but now I get a huge wealth. It’s not petroleum or gold, it is not castle or land. It’s your love. It’s the most valuable wealth in the world.

I'm Trying to Stop It
"Boy, why have you got cotton-wool in your ear? Is it infected?"
"No, sir, but you said yesterday that everything you told me went in one ear and out the other , so I am trying to stop it."
“孩子,你为什么用棉花塞住耳朵?它感染了吗?”
“没有,老师。可是你昨天说你告诉我的知识都是一个耳朵里进,一个耳朵里出,所以我要把它堵在里面。”
“I'm sorry ,Madam ,but I shall have to charge you twenty dollars for pulling your boy's tooth .”
“Twenty d ollars! Why ,I understand you to say that you charged only four dollars for such work!”
“Yes ,but this youngster yelled so terribly that he scared four other patients out of the office .”
“对不起,夫人,为您孩子拔牙我要收取20美元。”
“20美元!为什么?不是说好只要4美元。”
“是的,但是你的孩子大喊大叫,把另外四个病人吓跑了。”

Mon.:
Tomorrow will be Christmas. But Della feels very sad. Because she has no money to buy a present for her husband , Jim . She has only one dollar and eighty-seven cents . They have only 20 dollars a week, it doesn’t leave much for saving.
In fact, Della and Jim have two possessions in which they both take very great pride. One is Jim’s gold watch, which has been his father’s and his grandfather’s. The other is Della’s long beautiful hair.
D: Life is so hard for me. Though I saved the money for many months , I still have only one dollar and eighty seven cents.
D: I---- I---- I have to have my hair cut and sold it . In that way I can get some money and I can buy a beautiful present for Jim.
(At the shop—“Madame Sofronie. We Buy Hair Goods of All Kinds”)
D: Will you buy my hair?
M: Yes, I buy all kinds of hair. Sit down, please. Take your hat off and let me have a look. Oh, very beautiful. Very good! Twenty dollars , OK?
D: All right. But please give it to me quickly.
M: Here you are. Twenty dollars.
D: Thank you. Bye.
M: Bye.
Mon.:Della spent two hours in the streets. Then she stopped at a Gold Shop and bought a gold watch chain. Now ,Della is at home.
D: Oh, what a beautiful gold watch chain. I think it must match Jim's watch. When he sees it he must be very happy .
(Suddenly the door opened and in came Jim . )
J: You-----?
D: Jim. Don’t look at me that way. I had my hair cut off and sold it because I couldn’t have lived through Christmas without giving you a present. Jim, it will grow quickly. You don’t mind, do you ? I just had to do it. My hair grows very fast, you know. Say “Merry Christmas!” Jim, and let’s be happy.
J: You’ve cut off your hair?
D: I’ve cut it off and sold it. It’s sold. I tell you -sold and gone, too. It’s Christmas Eve , Jim. Be good to me, for it went for you.
J: Well , Della. Don’t make any mistake about me. I don’t think there’s anything about a hair cut that could make me love you any less. I know, it went for me. Look at this package .
D: What ?
J: Look at it yourself. You 'll see.
D:Ah! The combs. They were in the shop windows for many months!
J:Yes, the beautiful combs, pure tortoiseshell, with jewelry rims--just the color to wear in your beautiful, hair.
D: But , Jim. They are expensive combs. I know, my heart had longed for them without the least hope of possession. Now they are mine. Thank you Jim.
J; Now, you will see why I was upset at first.
D: Jim, you don’t know what a nice –what a beautiful , nice gift I’ve got for you. Can you guess?
J: I'm sorry. I won't guess.
D: Look. A gold watch chain. Isn’t it lovely ,Jim? I hunted all over the town to find it. You’ll have to look at the time a hundred times a day now. Give me your watch. I want to see how it looks on it .
J: Della, Let’s put our Christmas gifts away and keep them a while. They’re too nice to use just at present. I sold the watch to get the money. And I bought the combs. Now, Let’s have our supper.
