The New Grading System in Our School
In order to help students develop their abilities in all fields,our school now has asked the teachers to make some changes in the grading system.This chart shows how it works.
The students’ final score will be made up of 5 parts.About 30% of it will come from their test results.The rest of the score is decided by the performances of the students in the following parts:20% comes from your notes,and another 20% is decided by how you do your homework.If you take an active part in classroom activities,you can get another 20% of the score.Teamwork in class is also important.If you want a higher score,you should be good at working together with your classmates.
In my opinion,our school has made a good decision.This new grading system will certainly help to improve ourselves in all ways.

My high school recently switched to a grading system that is accessible via the internet,designed to allow students immediate access to their grades as soon as teachers updated their gradebooks.This is nice,sure,but the new system's security leaves much to be desired.
First,all students' photos are available online.They're all in a folder on the webserver with our id's:http://example.com/photos/1.JPG,http://example.com/photos/2.JPG,etc.Easily scraped using a script that incremented the number to get every student's photo.
When I saw how insecure those images were I thought I'd look to see what else was easily accessible with the new system.Poking around a bit,I found a summary page of all my student information (contact information,grades,GPA,classes,immunizations,etc.) that had my userid in the URL (&u=1234).When I replaced the userid with one of my friends' userids,it gave me easy access to all of his information as well.Obviously not a good thing.
I've heard about FERPA before,but I don't fully know its implications in a situation such as this (I wouldn't call what I did hacking to get other students' information - simply changing a GET parameter is ridiculous).My school is public so I'm fairly sure it's liable under that act.
I'm somewhat afraid that if I talk to the administration of my district I'll be accused of hacking the system when I really didn't - I also haven't used this hole to access anyone's grades except mine and my friend's,whose permission I had.
