It's obvious that physicians having complete and total control over their patients is not always as good as letting patients having some control.Yes,physicians are professional, and they have much more medical knowledge. But to cure a patient, medical knowledge is probably not sufficient enough in many cases. In particular,in case of many non-curable or almost non-curable diseases, medical treatment or at least pure medical treatment can do little, while on the other hand the patients wills and psychology is vital and sometimes can do a miracle for themselves to survive. Therefore, let patients know something may be a better option than let physicians to have the full control and keep it a total secret from the patients.
As to whether there should be a universally ideal standard of the balance on the information sharing between physicians and patients,in my opinion,it depends. It differs from case to case.To set up a general standard or protocol would be naive and impractical. It depends on the medical conditions,it depends on the physicians knowledge and their judgments, and it depends on the patients body and mental health status. And imaginably, same patients may even have totally different reactions in different circumstances. And from my perspective, this is actually the real and practical obstacle to share the information between the physicians and the patients.Because physicians really don't know and cannot anticipate what would happen to patients if they release some very sensitive medical information to them, many physicians simply choose to be conservative and keep those information from patients.Nonetheless, conceptually,it's fully justified to let physicians release some information and control to patients,or at least,to start to think about it and maybe even to study it clinically.
