　　放假的时候，我坐火车回到了我从未来过的故乡，那是我祖辈的故乡，不过我从来没有来过，这是我第一次来。虽然我没有来过，但这也应该算作是我的故乡。

　　我拿着纸上书写的不太清楚的地址，寻找着故乡的老房子。找了半天，看到一个败落的村落，村落的边境处有一座破旧的老房子，我又对照了一下纸上所写的模糊内容，看了看老房子，确定这大概就是我要找的地址。

　　我上前走去，伸出手敲了敲门。破旧的门缓缓地打开了，里面出来了一个小女孩，我以为她是我的亲戚什么的，经过一番询问后，发现这座老房子早已不是原先的主人了，在十年前已经卖给了现在居住的这户人家。我有些失落地告别了那个小女孩，转过身去缓慢地离开，只听见大门拉着长音，然后碰的一声关上了。我停下了脚步，又转了过来，望着这座陌生的老房子。

　　这是一座物是人非的老房子，虽然我对它非常陌生，但它一定承载了祖辈很多的回忆。

我家的老房子很是清冷，如今只有奶奶与爷爷住在里面。

因为老房子在农村，人少地多，家的附近都是极其空旷的。屋前和西边是小菜园，没有小城镇的喧哗和污浊，又得到河水辛勤的灌溉和滋养，因此这片菜园得天独厚，长势颇好。那灌溉菜园的小河，常年流水，从我记事起就从未停歇过。

家中多日都是两个人居住，摆设十分简朴。除了生活必需品，爷爷奶奶就再也不会多买些什么。可是，香却是家中必备的。

爷爷奶奶都很信佛，家里虽无佛像，台上却有四五个香台，每个香台里堆满了香灰。拿起香灰闻闻，弥弥之中有着不易察觉的香气。香粉很是细腻，就是这些微不足道的香灰，在我们家被奶奶赋予了不凡的用途。

洒在老案下，以此来除去虫子和阴气。于是老案那封闭的气息也会被香粉所替代。每每进家门，都会被这香气所弥绕，令人神清气爽，足以大赞!

家里还有一把老式躺椅，是竹编的，十分陈旧。它放在电视机前，冬天奶奶会铺上毯子，温暖十足，夏天不加饰物，尽显丝凉。躺在上面十分惬意，时而发出那“嗞嗞”的响声，就仿佛一直沉淀在时空外，时间里，令人神往，令人遐想……

我家屋前的田地也是独具一格，爷爷刨地时总会刨到几枚古时钱币，我们都很欢喜。这些铜钱满载时间、满载智慧令我无比倾慕。

我从小就在深圳长大，所以我对家乡并不熟悉，可是家乡的老房子却一点儿也不觉得陌生。

在家乡的小巷里，有许多古老的房屋，这些房屋都是我的祖先时代留下来的。这些房屋都是背山靠河，景色迷人，在那里可以看到纤尘不染的河水。房屋的外墙都是有趣的重复，黑白相间的砖使房屋变得更加有特色。房屋的屋檐有两个“牛角”，这两个“牛角”在屋檐上起了个装饰的作用，有时候飞来几只燕子，为春天增添了生机。房屋里是三房两厅，一楼有两个房间，二楼的房间是小阁楼，小阁楼虽然小，可还能住上三个人，虽然这些旧房屋并没有现在家乡新建的房屋那么豪华、美丽，可我非常喜欢这些家乡的房屋，因为在炎热的夏天，每家人都在家开着空调，可是在老房屋里，你不用开着风扇、空调，也会感到凉快，这可为我们省下了不少费用。

I know there are advantages to living in a modern apartment, but I'd prefer to live in a traditional house. My main reason is that I love traditional design. It's graceful and warm and inviting. I think modern design is very empty and sterile and not very inviting. So, because of the way it looks, I'd choose a traditional house.

I recognize the fact that a modern apartment is going to be in much better shape. Being new probably means all the plumbing works, the roof isn't going to leak, the windows are properly sealed, and the kitchen appliances are in working order. A traditional house can't guarantee any of that. In fact, it's likely that things will break down or need replacement, simply because of age.

Still, if the appliances are old, so is the wood, and that's a big advantage as far as I'm concerned. Very few new buildings have the kind of beautiful woods that were used years ago. It's something that can't be copied.

Space is always important to me, too. I need a lot of room for my home office, my clothes, and to display all the knickknacks I've picked up in my travels. I also like to have interesting space. I don't want all the rooms and windows the same size or a boxy design. A modern apartment usually comes in one size and shape. A traditional house is going to have a variety of spaces where I can put a little table or a window seat. And it will have lots of room, from basement to attic. These are

all good reasons for me to prefer living in a traditional house.
